Got a chance to catch up with Tracy Scaife, a cool friend of ours who specializes in mastering and works with Universal Music Group. See what he had to say.
7 Star Dreams: So Tracy, how long have you been mastering music and where did you go to school?
Tracy: Doing it for the at least 10 years. I was certified through 4U ENT/Universal Music.
7 Star Dreams: Tell us why mastering is so important and how do indies go about achieving an industry standard sound?
Tracy: By having a great mix to work with. Industry sounds start with the tracking of sessions and the mixing of sessions. A good recording makes a good mix, and that’s what makes a good master.
7 Star Dreams: You must see poor mixes all the time, which make it hard for you to master. What makes a good mix?
Tracy: The engineer that knows how to use the equipment to its best.
7 Star Dreams: How can artists looking to get their music mastered get in touch with you?
Tracy: Through you [at 7 Star Dreams]. They can holler at you first, and then you can give them my number.
